FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS !

What is the connection of the Cadet Corp to the Defence Force?

Despite mentioning this in the parent info page many parents are still concerned so I repeat it here. One common misconception is that we are a recruiting pool for the Regular Force. It is natural that those wishing to join the military do join up with our Unit, but there is no mandatory serving time within the unit, and the members can not be called up to the Regular Force.
They do supply us with our overall command, training syllabus, uniforms, equipment and expertise of their Regular Force staff.

What weapons are fired at the Cadet Corp?

The standard rifle fired without specialist staff is the Mark 1, No.8or No.9 .22 rifle, although we do have th a brand new Norinco .22.. When extra staff such as Regular Force can supply people one-on-one we fire the current Assault Rifle, the 5.56mm Steyr. We fire the Steyr once a year.

How many people have been lost in the bush in the history of Cadet Forces?

In the 104 year history of the New Zealand Cadet Corp, no one has got lost or seriously injured. All exercises are planned utilising a standard risk management protocol.

Who runs the New Zealand Cadet Corp?

The training of the Unit is run by volunteer officers. Many officers have previous experience in cadets or the military, although this is not a necessity. To become an officer people must be over the age of 21 and have an interview with the Unit Commander, the parent-based Support Committee and the regional Regular Force co-ordinator. The applicants are police vetted (police record checked) and finally approved by the Minister of Defence. The Unit is also advised by Staff of the Regular Force who also care for other Units in the Northern Region.
Administration and monetary affairs are handled by the Parent Support Committee. This is also a group of volunteer parents who meet once a month on a Unit Training night.
Extra volunteers are also always helpful, for further information on this please see the Contact Us section.

What gear does the Unit Supply?

The unit is typically able to supply cadets with most of the uniform and equipment they need. The uniforms are owned by the unit and are given on loan to cadets, so they are expected to be cared for and returned in good condition when the cadet leaves the unit. Occasionally packs, sleepings bags, cookers and other camping gear will be loaned to the cadets on a short-term loan. Normal wear and tear is acceptable, but should any items/uniform be damged through irresponsible use or lost, then the cost of replacement will be met by the cadet.

What type of Military Transport do Cadets utilise?

When traveling to local camps, or within the North Island as a complete Unit, we utilise the standard Army Unimog (Army Truck) or Army Bus. If traveling in a smaller group to a course, in the North or South Island, Cadets travel by Air Force Andover or Hercules Aircraft. We also fly on Andover Airplanes and Iroqi Helicopter's on one camp per year. When visiting Naval Bases, or the opportunities arises we are allowed on various Naval Ships.
